IYBC Confessions of a Denim Connoisseur #7: The Death of the Back Pocket

  • June 12, 2009

Like I’ve always said, I initially was drawn to designer denim because of the signature back pocket detail. Before we knew it, “expensive jeans” became a status symbol back in high school, and have now become almost a common wardrobe essential for most middle to upper class citizens. With the dope back pockets came sick washes and superior cuts, but who paid attention to that anyway? Even I admit I didn’t care about the wash as long as they were Sevens, True Religions or Rock & Republic. Or maybe that wast just me? Anyway, times have clearly changed, and ironically, three of my current favorite pairs of jeans have absolutely no back pocket. There is obviously the slightest details, but other than that, only a real Denim Connoisseur would recognize them on me. Let’s begin shall we?

o1. the Slim Guy in Cashere Denim via Naked & Famous Jeans
It seems that Grey Denim has recently experienced quiet a bit of popularity, and for all the right reasons. Black is a bit dressy, blue a bit plain. Grey jeans are just right to rock with a fresh pair of kicks and a crisp tee. Also, extremely easy to dress up. $250 CDN at Holt Renfrew.

o2. the Slim Jim in Coated Black via Nudie Jeans Co
The most versatile denim I’ve had the pleasure of owning. Work with sneakers, sandals, dress shoes, loafers, boat shoes, and any/everything, this denim commands attention, and gets enough of it. A style staple in its own right, these are also one of my most comfortable pair of jeans. $199 CDN at High Grade.

o3. the Straight Leg in Dark Denim via Purple Purpose Denim

I’m not sure what it is about these jeans; the denim density, the bandana print inside pockets, or just the fact that not a lot of people know anything about PRPS, but whenever I rock these, I feel like a total celebrity. And seriously, the fit, cut and wash always draws compliments. $375 CDN at Henry.
